GST Registration

In India, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an extensive indirect tax system that applies to the supply of goods and services ¹. Businesses with a turnover above the specified threshold must register for GST, while those below the threshold can opt for voluntary registration ¹. Voluntary registration offers benefits like input tax credit and recognition as a registered entity ¹. There are various types of GST registration, including Regular, Composition, Non-Resident, and Casual Taxable Person, each suited to different business activities ¹. Upon successful registration, a unique 15-digit GSTIN is assigned to the registered entity for all GST-related transactions ¹.

GST registration is required for businesses with a yearly turnover exceeding Rs. 40 lakhs for goods and Rs. 20 lakhs for services ¹. However, businesses with a turnover below these thresholds can still opt for voluntary registration ¹. The GST Council has recommended that all businesses with a turnover above Rs. 40 lakhs should register for GST, regardless of their state of registration ¹.

There are different types of GST registration, including ¹:
– Regular: For businesses with a turnover above the threshold limit
– Composition: For small businesses with a turnover below Rs. 1.5 crore
– Non-Resident: For businesses operating outside India
– Casual Taxable Person: For businesses making occasional supplies

Upon successful registration, a unique GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) is assigned to the registered entity ¹. GSTIN is a 15-digit alphanumeric code used for all GST-related transactions ¹
